Artisan Saucisson Prices: Comparing Price per Kilo and Formats

Prix du saucisson artisanal : comparer le prix au kilo et les formats

To compare the price of an artisan saucisson, start with the price per kilo, then look at the weight, the ingredients and the format. The price per piece can be misleading: a smaller, cheaper saucisson may cost more per kilo than a larger one. Here is a simple method to compare your purchase without confusing price, quantity and quality.

Calculating the price per kilo

The formula is: price per kilo = price of the piece × 1,000 ÷ weight in grams. For a bundle, first add up the weight of all the pieces. Use the net weight stated for the offer, excluding the box or accessories.

Fictional worked examples, unrelated to catalogue prices
Format Total weight Example price Price per kilo
One piece 200 g €8 €40/kg
One piece 300 g €12 €40/kg
Two 160 g pieces 320 g €12.80 €40/kg
One large piece 500 g €15 €30/kg

In these examples, the first three offers have the same price per kilo. The €8 piece needs a smaller budget, but it is not cheaper by weight than the €12 one. These figures only illustrate the calculation. They are neither a market survey nor an average price.

What is a fair price for an artisan saucisson?

No single price tells you on its own that a saucisson is good. To compare two offers usefully, put similar products side by side: plain saucisson with plain saucisson, a similar weight, the same type of packaging. A box mixing saucisson, ham and lomo cannot be compared directly with a bundle of plain saucissons.

Price then becomes one criterion among others. To learn more about choosing the product, see our guide how to recognise a genuine artisan saucisson.

Five things to compare before buying

  1. Weight and number of pieces. A photo does not show quantity. Check the stated weight of the product or bundle.
  2. Ingredients. Compare the ingredient list and the information about the meat. The word “artisan” does not replace reading the recipe, and it does not automatically mean “no additives”.
  3. Stated origin. Distinguish between the origin of the meat, the place of production and the name of a recipe. Read the details on each product page.
  4. Format. A whole piece, a ready-made assortment and a gift box with accessories do not serve the same purpose.
  5. Delivered price. Look at shipping costs and the conditions that apply to your order, not just the product price.

Single, bundle or box: which to choose?

Single pieces let you pick a specific product or complete a board. Compare the formats in our selection of saucissons and dry sausages. The handmade artisan saucisson sec has its own page with weight, ingredients and current price.

In a bundle, check the total weight and the exact contents. Two small pieces are not necessarily more product than one large piece. If you want a finer speciality, also compare the formats of Catalan Espetec fuet, bearing in mind that it is a different product.

In a box, the benefit is the selection and variety. See the charcuterie aperitif boxes to share several specialities, or the charcuterie gift boxes. Compare the list of pieces and the total weight before deciding for your occasion.

Planning your budget without overbuying

Start from the number of guests and the role of charcuterie in the menu: a few slices with drinks and a generous board do not need the same purchase. Our guide to charcuterie quantities per person helps you plan your selection.

A better price per kilo is only worthwhile if the format suits you. For a gift, variety and the recipient's tastes may matter more than a lower price per kilo.

Frequently asked questions about saucisson prices

Is a more expensive saucisson always better?
No. Compare the product information, format and recipe. Price alone tells you nothing about quality or your taste.

How do you calculate the price per kilo of a bundle?
Divide the bundle price by its total weight in kilograms. For two 160 g pieces, the total weight is 0.320 kg.

Why can't a box be compared with a single saucisson?
A box can combine different cured meats and special packaging. Compare its detailed contents and total weight with an equivalent offer.
